I found two great resources that I discovered by reading through some other "mom blogs" I sometimes follow. One resource, geared more towards older children, is called Everyday Emmanuel, and the other, geared more towards younger children, is called The Truth in the Tinsel: An Advent Experience for Little Hands. I have decided to piece together elements from both curriculum as I, by God's grace, begin to shape together a fun, meaningful, God-honoring and Christ-glorifying plan of action and experiences for Tot School and our family for the month of December. I have posted some information on both resources below.
This week we got some new countertops installed in our kitchen!!! As a result, it was a bit hectic around here with one of our primary living spaces off limits. It was also Baby Roo's first birthday!!! We celebrated by sharing some massive cupcakes and opening a few gifts. In the midst of it all, we did begin a few preparations for the Advent season by reading through some of the Christmas story, creating some ornaments, making an Advent wreath as a family and picking out and decorating our Christmas tree.
"The people walking in darkness
have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of deep darkness
a light has dawned...
For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace."
Isaiah 9:2, 6
The first resource I will be using is called The Truth Behind the Tinsel: An Advent Experience for Little Hands. It breaks the Biblical Christmas story (and even some Old Testament prophesies) into smaller chunks that are a bit more digestible for a young mind. Every day the writer of this curriculum, Amanda White, has suggested an ornament craft to make with your young child to represent an aspect of the Christmas story that corresponds with a Bible verse and some suggestions for "talking points." You can purchase the book as PDF to download from her website for $7.99 here.
You can purchase the printable PDF for $9.99 here. Or, if you would like to purchase both the PDF book and the DVD, you can purchase both for $14.99 by typing in the discount code found at the bottom of this website.
LETTER OF THE WEEK: H
- H is for "Hark!" the Herald Angels sing. "Glory to the newborn King."
(corresponds with Truth in the Tinsel crown ornament below)
- H is for holly.
JESUS IS THE LIGHT
GABRIEL and the HEAVENLY HOSTS
We won't be doing all the lessons in Ms. White's book, but I will definitely be using her book as a guide to incorporate into our weekly routine. Here are some of the ornaments the girls made this week. We have a small Christmas tree that the girls will hang all the ornaments they make on each week as a reminder of different aspects of Christ and the Christmas story. I am excited! We are off to a great start!
