The Bear Snores On and Other Hibernating Tales

1/25/2013

This week was a short week, and poor Leila was sick for a few days, but our new friend joined us again this week, which was great!  We did get a chance to talk about hibernation, "taking a long nap in the winter time."  We talked about how some animals like bears don't really like to be out in the cold, so they find a warm place like a cave to sleep in until spring time.  The book, We're Going on a Bear Hunt, was a really fun book.  It had a lot of action-related, onomatopoeia words that just happened to start with the letter 'S,' which just so happened to be our Letter of the Week.  The girls loved acting out the story by "swish, swoshing" through the tall grass, "splish-splashing" through the river, "squelch-skwerching" through the mud, and "stumble-tripping" through the woods to get to a cave (aka toy chest) where a bear (aka stuffed panda) was hibernating.  The girls would yell and run back through all the pretend obstacles that led us to the cave to the couch which was our "safety" from the bear.  Fun fun fun!  Next week our BEAR and HIBERNATION theme will draw to a close.  It has been a fun month!

I got this idea from one of my favorite blogs, Totally Tots.

MONTESSORI-INSPIRED WORK BOXES

The girls are starting to get the hang of the work boxes.  I continue to model taking out a mat for their work space (and cleaning up...) But they are beginning to expect new items for them to explore oin the trays and bins.  The beginning of the week has a new excitement to it! The picture of them all working on a work box independently but also together at the same time is so cute.  They did a great job taking turns, helping each other and switching work boxes when they were done.  Last January marked our first official month of "Tot School" and our first theme was WINTER TIME, so it was great to pull out many of the teaching tools I had created last year.  It certainly made prepping this week super easy.  Many of the activities even started with 'S,' our Letter of the Week!  Pretty conveniently awesome!  (I have yet to upload our monthly plans from January- April of last year...I do hope to get to it eventually.)

INGREDIENTS:
  • 1 cup almond butter
  • ½ cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 2 whole eggs
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground ginger
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup pure maple syrup, or honey
  • Optional: ground walnuts, for topping

DIRECTIONS:
  1. Preheat your oven to 350F, and line a standard muffin tin with 12 paper cups.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine all of the ingredients and mix until a smooth, runny batter is formed.
  3. Using a ¼ cup, distribute the batter evenly among the 12 baking cups.
  4. Sprinkle the tops with ground walnuts, if desired. (I pulsed the walnuts in my mini food chopper to create a mix of fine powder and chunky walnut pieces for topping.)
  5. Bake at 350F for about 15 minutes, or until the muffins firm in the center and lightly golden.
  6. Allow to cool for 15 minutes, then remove from the pan and serve warm, or at room temperature.
